The Allium family is perhaps one of the world’s largest plant groups. This is because it not only includes all of the wonderful ornamental types that we supply but it also covers all species of Onion and Garlic too.
The Alliums offered by The Bulb Shop and Gee Tee Bulb Company are purely ornamental, used for their architectural qualities and vibrant colours. None of which are edible with the exception of Allium Ursinum, commonly known as ‘Wild Garlic’, it is very popular for the kitchen garden.
We sell an excellent selection of Allium varieties for formal and informal planting. Alliums vary greatly in size and colour. From the little Allium Moly with small, bright yellow flowers, perfect for pots and rockeries to the enormous Allium Mont Blanc, 130cm in height with large creamy white ball shaped blooms on top of a strong, leafless stem. Our best seller by a mile is Allium hollandicum 'Purple Sensation', which holds an Award of Garden Merit. At just under a metre in height, the spherical violet purple heads on long slender stems look wonderful planted in amongst perennials and other spring flowering bulbs.
Alliums prefer a sunny spot with well drained soil. If your soil is heavy, a handful of coarse sand or grit in the planting hole may be of benefit.
The basal leaves of many Allium types will often wither away from the tips downward before or while the plant is in flower. These can be pulled away easily or hidden by surrounding plants. A few species have persistent foliage such as Allium Karataviense which is short and works well in pots.
Most Alliums make superb, long lasting cut flowers.
