Crocus and Iris Bulbs

Crocus Large Flowering

The crocus is a very versatile bulb, which can be planted just about anywhere, from tiny pots to great carpets of colour. Like snowdrops and bluebells these are most impressive when planted in large numbers. In late February or early March the contrast that crocus will give flowering against yellow daffodils is superb.

If you want your crocus to naturalise in grass, the quickest and most effective way is to use a spade to cut under and peel back the turf. Roughly break up the soil and scatter the bulbs randomly, then simply roll back the turf. Be sure to avoid mowing the grass for a couple of weeks after flowering until the foliage has died back.

Crocus Autumn Flowering

This selection gives a gorgeous display of long lasting flowers, especially once they’ve had a chance to settle in a few years after planting. Appearing in the autumn, the buds push through without leaves and flare out into beautiful blue-mauve shades. They will thrive most when positioned in the sun and planted in a well-drained soil.

Crocus Species

Specie Crocus is available in a vast range of varieties and colours. From pastel shades to vibrant blues, violets, yellows or creams, these sophisticated little flowers open wide wherever they receive full light in late winter and early spring. Although the flowers are more delicate than the larger family members, they are equally as popular for naturalising, but with an earlier flowering time.

Dutch Iris

These Dutch Iris flower early in summer and are much taller than Specie Iris. There is a vast choice of varieties in this Iris family, with many different colour combinations, each as delightful as the next. Ideal for flowerbeds where they will not get waterlogged, Dutch Iris make a beautiful cut flower and have been used in floristry for many years.

Specie Iris

Early, miniature flowers appearing in late February or early March, Specie Iris are finely detailed and perfect for patio containers where you can catch their sweet fragrance. A sunny spot and sandy soil is best for these tiny beauties: plant at least four inches deep to prevent the bulbs from splitting and to encourage flowering in the following season.
