Hostas are the perfect plants for any shaded or semi-shaded part of the garden. There are many varieties available, large rounded leaves to small narrow ones and leaf colours ranging from blue to green to golden yellow. They are obviously more memorable for their foliage which makes their flowers, consisting of tall spikes topped with several trumpet-shaped blooms, more of an added bonus.

Hostas are so easy to grow too, they can be left in the ground year after year or can look fantastic in containers. Mature plants can easily be divided by lifting and gently pulling the roots apart.

Plant in moist, fertile soil with the growing tips close to the surface. Most hostas will flower early-mid August.

Hostas look superb in tall pots - this will give them a much better chance against slugs and snails.
