Allium Sphaerocephalon (Drumsticks)

It’s fascinating to watch these small baubles, bobbing on tall stems in the breeze. Each flower head is made of tiny buds, initially green, then deep purple slowly suffuses them and the many tiny flowers open, for bees to feast fabulously. Eventually they grow fat and blousy, fading to ashen coloured seed heads.

Allium Sphaerocephalon, also known as Drumstick Alliums, don’t like to be overshadowed otherwise they will lean out towards the light. This inexpensive allium bulb adds movement and interest to your garden, and they also make a long lasting cut flower.
