Snowdrops bloom from January through March to bring wonderful colour and honey scent to winter landscapes. The ‘in the Green’ variety of Snowdrops are differentiated from the usual bulb by the fact that they are lifted whilst in leaf, sometimes in flower. Subsequently, they can establish themselves more quickly in the following growing season.
When to plant Snowdrops in the Green
The best time to plant Snowdrops in the Green is in spring generally just after flowering, but while the plants are still in leaf, usually around March through to April.
Where to plant Snowdrops in the Green
As woodland plants, Snowdrops prefer partial shade and moist but well-drained soil, preferably with leaf mold and natural mulch in the soil. To ensure you’ve got ideal conditions, pre-prepare the area ahead of planting.
Snowdrops do extremely well planted near the foot of deciduous shrubs and hedges, in rock gardens, in grassy areas or in spring border displays.
How to Grow Snowdrops in the Green
Prepare the area for planting by loosening the soil, digging shallow trenches or holes, and mixing in leaf mold or compost, ensuring that the soil remains moist.
Divide the clusters of Snowdrop bulbs and lay them in the prepared area with the leaves pointing towards the sun.
You should take care to plant them at the same depth as they were previously planted, which you can identify by the white area at the neck of each plant.
Backfill the hole and compact the soil lightly, watering the plants immediately.
Caring for your Snowdrops in the Green
Snowdrops should be divided every third year to ensure healthy propagation. You can also layer some coarse sand around the bulb zone if you’re concerned about rot, and to protect the plants against squirrels or other rodents you can lay netting around the young plants.
After flowering each season, carefully lift the bulbs with a hand fork, taking care to keep the roots intact and foliage in place. Divide the clumps and replant immediately to build bulk displays over time.
