Yellow Trumpet Daffodil Bulbs
Yellow trumpet daffodils are the quintessential spring bulb. An iconic flower with 6 yellow tepals (petals) surrounding a long corona (trumpet) varying slightly in strength of colour or shape of the petal. The trumpet daffodil (or narcissus) is a member the Amaryllidaceae family. The Daffodil is an ancient flower with medicinal properties, although don’t attempt to eat them! The alkyds within daffodil bulbs are poisonous, but this has the benefit of deterring pests from eating them.
The first major flowers of the year bringing bountiful colour to the winter landscape. Large, strong yellow flowers on tall stems of upto 50cm, daffodil bulbs are tough and will survive in fairly harsh conditions. This is why you will see them happily bobbing around on the side of roads. They require no additional care when they have been planted. They will naturally spread by bulb division and by seed. You can plant them in semi shade or full sun in any type of soil.
A trumpet daffodil is classified by having a longer trumpet than the petals. There are many varieties of yellow trumpet daffodil because years of cultivation has allowed for interesting variations of shape and colour. A species of daffodil generally only has a life span of around 30 years when it is commercially cultivatedbecause they can lose some of their resistance to diseases, so newer, tougher bulbs are brought into circulation.
King Alfred is perhaps the most commonly known trumpet daffodil, but commercial bulbs will be a descendant of the original variety to ensure you get strong, healthy bulbs. Pesticides are not used in the production of flower bulbs.
All of our Trumpet daffodil bulbs are cultivated in the UK by growers in Lincolnshire. Growers in the UK leave their daffodil bulbs in the ground for 2 years, to be lifted during summer, cleaned and graded into 25Kg nets. We pre-pack our bulbs in our warehouse into smaller numbers.
Daffodil bulbs are great fillers, we recommend planting 60-70 bulbs per square metre. And a 25Kg net can cover 7-9 square metres depending on how densely you plant the bulbs.
