Amaryllis belladonna, commonly known as Belladonna lily or Naked Lady, is a beautiful flowering bulb that blooms in late summer into early autumn.
The bell-shaped pink or white flowers have long stamens that add to their charm. The plant grows from an underground bulb and produces several leaves and stems. They look great planted in clumps.
When caring for Amaryllis Belladonna, it is important to provide the plant with well-drained soil and plenty of sun. They are half-hardy, but benefit from a little shelter, such as planting near a south facing wall to prevent them from being caught by early frosts. In order to ensure good bloom production, the bulbs should be planted at least 6 inches deep in nutrient-rich soil, try not to disturb them for a couple of seasons to allow them to establish.
Watering needs depend on the season; during warmer months the plant should receive about 1 inch of water per week while during cooler months the plant will need less water.
Fertiliser can be added to the soil once a month in order to promote healthy growth and blooms. Deadheading the flowers after they have finished blooming is also recommended, as this encourages new buds to form.
Finally, it is important to keep the area around the Amaryllis free of weeds and debris so that it has enough room to grow.
