‘The Guernsey Lily’ Nerines are bulbous plants that produce flamboyant, trumpet-shaped flowers in a range of shades. They typically bloom during the autumn months and can bring a vivid pop of colour to your garden. To ensure they look their best and flower each year, they require some basic care.
Nerines should be planted in well drained soil and kept away from overly damp spots. When planting them outdoors, use a quality potting mix. Place them at least 15cm below the surface of the soil. If you’d like to move them around your garden more easily, you can also plant them in containers or pots with good drainage holes at the bottom.
These plants prefer full sun for most of the day. Additionally, they like their soil to be slightly acidic with a pH range of 6.0-6.5. Mix in some peat moss or sulphur chips when planting them.
When the Nerine bulbs go dormant (usually at the end of winter), it’s important to stop watering them completely. This will help prevent root rot and ensure that they are able to bloom again. When new growth appears, however, you should water them regularly but avoid overwatering as this will cause their leaves to yellow and stunt their growth overall.
Finally, always remember to feed your Nerines during the growing season. A balanced liquid fertilizer is best and should be applied every two weeks during the summer months to ensure strong blooms in autumn. Can’t get much easier than that!
All in all, Nerines are easy to care for as long as you keep up with regular watering, avoid overwatering and make sure they’re planted in well drained soil. With a little bit of love and attention, these stunning flowers will bring years of colour to your garden. Enjoy!
Nerine’s can also be propagated through division – divide the bulbs when they go dormant and replant them at least 6 inches below the surface of the soil. This will give you lots more flowers next year!
