Bluebell Bulbs ‘In the Green’ – A familiar sight and smell is sure to greet you in any English woods during mid spring as the ground is carpeted with the violet; nodding bell-shaped flower of the true English Bluebell. Self-seeding; they will continue to spread in large clumps each year.

Bluebell Bulbs ‘In the Green’ or Hyacinthoides Non-Scripta is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Which means you can’t dig these up without the right license. They are an important part of the British countryside, drawing visitors into the woodlands to experience carpets of blue flowers every April.

The English bluebell is known as Hyacinthoides Non-Scripta, with a host of common names. They are a rich violet colour with white anthers. The bells hang from one side of the stem and gives them their unique nodding form. Growing to about 20cm tall with thin bright green foliage. You can experience the scent from these flowers when they are planted in mass and fill the air certainly a wonderful experience.

How to plant English Bluebell Bulbs

Plant these actively growing Hyacinthoides Non-Scripta in the green bulbs between late February and April. Plant the bulbs with a dibber 5-8 cm apart. Keep some of the foliage out at the top. You should be able to see where the plant had been previously underground where the leaves are white. If you have lots of bulbs to plant we suggest cutting an envelope in the soil and laying the bulbs in. You should fit 7-10 bulbs for the width of the cut. The bulbs should be between 8 and 12 cm deep.

They do grow in any soil but if you want them to naturalise plant them in a humus rich soil that is well drained and moist. This will be ideal for cultivating the young bulbs and seeds to make sure they don’t dry out over summer. A semi shaded spot is best, if you imagine their natural home is amongst deciduous trees. They will be happy in the sun however, just remember they are a fleshy bulb and can dry out.

Please be aware, there are only limited numbers of English bluebell bulbs in the green each year. Buy the bluebell bulbs in autumn too.
