Galanthus Nivalis Snowdrops (1000 single snowdrops) In the Green
Galanthus nivalis (1000 single snowdrops) or the common snowdrop is a simple flower. Although there are many variations of the galanthus you’ll have to get down on your hands and knees to see many of the subtle differences. What makes Galanthus Nivalis so impressive is when they spread amongst the trees creating a carpet of white flowers early in the year. It can take many years for a bulb to develop from a seed so the naturalisation of Galanthus nivalis is quite slow. However, planting bulbs in the green is one way to speed up you woodland paradise. We stock large quantities of UK snowdrops, lifted under license. Our 1000 bulbs for sale rate is a really economic way to cover lots of ground.
How to Plant
Usually we recommend planting 200 bulbs per square metre. Planting 1000 bulbs individually can be labour intensive. We would recommend taking a small handful of bulbs and cutting a small opening with a spade. Pop them in around 8cm deep. There will be a white mark on the stem where the bulbs have previously been under ground which should give you a good indication of how deep to plant them. Snowdrops are clump forming and this is the most natural looking way to plant them. You should be able to cover 5 metres squared with these bulbs. Although if you want to you could spread them out further to cover more ground.
Remember that in the green is a way of planting delicate bulbs. Planting dry bulbs in their dormant state over Autumn can lead to a lot of wastage. You may not get flowers from this years crop however it is much more likely to give you more success for the following year.
Galanthus nivalis (1000 single snowdrops) are bulbs for the shade. Over summer the ground can dry out, so a bit of protection from the canopy of the trees helps care for the bulbs. They don’t need feeding but remember not to mow over the foliage until it has turned brown. Together with some fertile, free draining soil should provide all the food they need.
