Caring for your Christmas Rose

Helleborus niger (Christmas Rose) is perfect for growing at the front of a partially shaded border, they perform best in moist soil, in semi shade.

Cut old leaves down to the ground in January or February as this will show off the new emerging flowers to best effect and help to avoid diseases such as Hellebore leaf spot. Apply a generous mulch around the base of the plant in Autumn and apply general fertiliser each spring.

Although Helleborus are evergreen they often lose their foliage in the first year. Hellebores do not like to be disturbed once established, so should not be divided. Given the right conditions, it will self-seed and spread.
