Lilies are incredible flowers that grow in temperate climates across the world. They bring to mind the plant hunters of the 19th Century. Bringing home exotic and splendid flowers from the far east.
It wasn’t until the 30s and 40s that lilies were extensively hybridised and become the staple garden flower. As well as supplying the cut flower industry with an impressive but reliable flower. However, be conscious of the origins of lilies. They can travel a lot of miles to get to you. Our bulbs are grown in the Netherlands and do not use pesticides.
The bulb is made up of fleshy leaves, much the same as any other bulb but these are exposed and displayed in a sort of pinecone arrangement.
The bulbs can produce an array of roots. Some grow at the base of the stem and others are used by the bulb to pull them deeper into the ground.
How to grow
Lily bulbs are hardy and can cope with hard frosts despite their fleshy appearance. They will last for many years provided you care for them.
Plant in full sun or semi shade in well draining rich soil. Many lilies originate from woody areas so humus rich soil is ideal. You can throw some mulch over them during winter. It helps to plant them up to 15-20cm deep to give the 1m stem a good support at the base. Remove the seed heads once they have flowered and fertilise to help the bulbs prepare for the dormant period. Cut the stem to ground level over winter.>Lily Regale are highly scented. Asiatic lilies are non scented.
