Mirabilis jalapa (Marvel of Peru) commonly known as the four o’clock flower, is a tropical flowering plant. It grows up to one meter in height and has tuberous roots.
The leaves are oval-shaped and have distinct long petioles. Its most unique feature is its flowers that open in the afternoon (hence their other common name) and close before sunrise the next day.
The blooms come in a variety of colors including pink, purple, yellow and white. Mirabilis jalapa can be found growing wild throughout tropical regions of South America but it is also widely cultivated as an ornamental plant for its showy flowers. This fast-growing annual requires full sun and moist soil for optimal growth.
