More Information
Polygonatum multiflorum is an herbaceous perennial plant native to the temperate regions of Asia and Europe. This plant is also known as Solomon’s Seal, due to the bulging shape of its tuberous rhizomes. It has long, graceful stems that reach up to two feet tall. With bright green ovate leaves growing in opposite pairs along them. In spring and summer, clusters of white flowers with yellowish-green stamens bloom at the tips of the stems.
The best way to grow Polygonatum multiflorum is by planting a rhizome or root in rich soil during early spring or late autumn. Ensure that it has enough space for new roots and leafy growth. It is best to plant the rhizome at least two inches below the soil surface and in full sun or semi-shade. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged, as this will encourage healthy growth. Additionally, it is important to mulch the soil around the plant with organic matter such as leaf mould or compost. This helsp retain moisture and control weeds. When trimming away any dead stems or foliage in autumn, be careful not to damage any of the underground rhizomes.
Polygonatum multiflorum should also be divided every three years for optimal health and vigour; simply dig up a section of rhizomes from the parent plant and separate into smaller pieces before replanting each piece individually.
