More Information
Tulip Banja Luka is named after the second largest city in Bosnia. The J is soft and pronounced as a Y. This bright tulip has a very original formation of colours. Predominantly yellow and red, with a black centre, typical of Darwin Hybrid tulips.
The outer petal has a large yellow diamond, edged with a fiery red and yellow. The inside of the flower continues the yellow flames on the outer rim whilst red is the dominant colour. Tulip Banja Luka is a slightly smaller flower than other Darwin Hybrids but still larger than the traditional triumph tulip.
This tulip bulb will flower from late April and into May for 2-3 weeks, they enjoy the sun and open wide on hot days. To see the full effect of Banja Luka’s wonderful markings, plant in a sunny position. Tulip bulbs also perform well in semi-shaded positions.
The optimal time to plant Tulip Banja Luka is October, although you can plant as late as January and they will still put on a good display. Tulip bulbs require no preparation before planting. Plant them 15cm deep and around 10cm apart, in well-draining soil. If you want to get the best from them, plant them in a sunny position, to see them open wide in the sun, or else, plant them in semi-shade where they are equally happy.
Tulip Banja Luka stands on a stem of 50cm, and is relatively resistant to the effects of changeable spring weather.
What are Darwin Hybrid Tulips?
Darwin hybrid tulips are a cross between single late and early emperor tulips, they typically bloom between mid-April and mid-May. Their height and boldness make them favourites for commercial displays and domestic gardens. The long, sturdy stems also make them a great choice for flower arranging.
Darwin hybrid tulips are reliably tolerant of changeable spring weather, but still produce big, showy flowers of the classic tulip shape in a rainbow range of colours. They open wide on a bright day, but will close again as evening draws in or during chilly showers.
