What are Species Tulips?

Species tulips are spring bulbs that can be left in the ground to return year on year and will naturalise if left undisturbed. They are shorter, smaller and look delicate, but most Species Tulips are native to mountainous regions, meaning that they are quite hardy.

Planting Species Tulip bulbs

Plant Species Tulip bulbs in the same way as you would with hybrid tulips; at around a depth of 15-20cm and approximately 15cm apart. They will grow happily in borders, pots or grass. It doesn’t matter if the bulbs fall on their side as they will sort themselves out. After they have finished flowering, leave the foliage in place to die back before removing, allowing nutrients to transfer back into the bulb to be stored for flowering next spring. Species Tulips can be left in the ground as reliable perennials.

If you leave Tulip Pulchella Little Princess undisturbed, it will naturalise freely.
